CHAPTER XII

ALWAYS ON THE JOB

Predmore grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down at his desk. It was obvious to him that something was wrong with his partner, but he was too wise to bring up the subject without an invitation. But he did have a pretty good idea what it was however.

Both detectives knew they would have to talk to Joseph Monarch and Denise Fargo as soon as possible. They didn’t think that Monarch was going to be too hard to find, his name and address were listed in the Manhattan White Pages. It showed his address as 481 W 98th street.

The entire mystique about giving a phone number to the maitre d’ at Shadows didn’t really make any sense now, unless that’s all it really was; a mystique. Nevertheless, they hoped they would be able to interview him soon. Cipiletti tried the number listed in the book, but only got an answering machine. They didn’t want to spook him, so they didn’t leave any messages.

Joseph Monarch lived in a typical Manhattan high rise, but this one overlooked the Hudson River. A doorman greeted then and they had to tin their way in. They didn’t tell the doorman who they were looking for, just a quick,

There was nothing to hear, so they knocked. Again, there was nothing to hear, apparently no one was home. Now, it would be time to talk to the doorman.

He was a regular guy and knew Monarch, but admitted he hardly saw him. He did say that Monarch was hardly ever alone. He’d always be coming and going with small groups of both men and women. They’d come into the building together and seemed to stay in his apartment for long periods of time, sometimes for several days. He wasn’t too sure about the parties at the apartment, but he certainly knew something was going on up there. They showed him a picture of Diana Cassey, but he couldn’t recall ever seeing her. They thanked him for his help and left.

It’s very frustrating for an investigator when things like this happen. They were all prepared to spar with Monarch, a very important suspect but instead they didn’t even get a chance to see him. This changed their plans for the day. Now, it would be off to Queens and Denise Fargo.

The address they had on her was on Union Turnpike in the Glen Oaks Section. At this time of the morning traffic would be going the opposite way, so the trip out there would take less than an hour. Glen Oaks is
